Dorothy emerged in the sweaty summer of 2014, flying the flags for revivalist blues-rock and the hot red lipstick favored by dynamic frontwoman Dorothy Martin. As the first actual rock act on Roc Nation, Martin and her mates debuted with the muscular, ironically titled “ROCKISDEAD” in 2016. Working with different collaborators, Dorothy pivoted to an aesthetic recalling ’70s classic rock on their 2018 sophomore album, “28 Days in the Valley.”

Now the pendulum has swung back. “What’s Coming to Me,” released last week as the first new music since that album, is an enticing heavy blues number riding Martin’s pipes to catharsis. The song “is a story about casting out a demon and getting redeemed — a metaphor for depression or addiction,” Martin says. “I think it’s something we can all relate to. Everyone’s struggling with something.”

Linda Strawberry (Smashing Pumpkins) created the symbolism-filled video for the single, suggesting visually what fans who have witnessed Dorothy live already embrace: that the singer can be the fiercest of rock shamans. Stomp and holler as you must.
