The way Matt Reid and Michael Perry Rudes tell it, the spark for Normans was ignited while they were on a broken-down boat off the coast of Los Angeles. Reid (of Blonde Summer) and Rudes (of FEELS) were seeking something raw and immediate, a sound that would fit Reid’s lyrics about violence, drug use, redemption and, they says, “the terrified animal caged within us all.”
The bass leads the way on their first two singles, the calamitous “Fury on the Island” and the positively riveting “Anti Crusoe,” which drips with menace while evoking the likes of Nick Cave and Iggy Pop. There are some bad, weird things happening in the video, too, but like the ink drawing “press photo” that the duo sent along, it’s best to let the visuals be their own thing and immerse yourself in Normans’ charming causticity.
