Video: Deb Never, ‘Disassociate’

To borrow the late sportscaster Stuart Scott’s catchphrase, Deb Never is as cool as the other side of the pillow.

The singer-songwriter, the daughter of a Korean pastor and a nurse who was reared mostly in the Pacific Northwest, fell in with the electronic collective WeDidIt upon settling in L.A. and first earned wide attention for her appearance on Brockhampton’s “No Halo.” She drew acclaim for her debut EP, “House on Wheels,” in 2019, and followed it with the Bandcamp-only “Intermission” EP, proceeds from which went to charity.

Her new album (at eight songs, she’s calling it a “project”) is titled “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?” (out Sept. 10), and it features production from Luke Wild, Jam City, Jim-E Stack, Michael Percy, Luke Wild and more.

We’re late to the party, but we could stay sufficiently intoxicated for months on “Disassociate,” a tune exemplary of her mélange of pop, hip-hop and grunge lite.

Here, the artist born Deborah Jung is holding things together, admittedly anesthetized but sleeping next to her demons, “scared to death of growing older” and, perhaps worse, of fading away. Hear you.
