Gypsum have been meting out their complex, immersive post-rock to sophisticates on the L.A. scene for more than six years. Now they’re ready to make a larger statement: The trio has announced that their self-titled debut album will be out Oct. 12 via Sonic Ritual.
The band — Anna Arboles, Sapphire Jewell and Jessy Reed, with Rosie Tucker having moved to a solo project — made the album at Station House Studio with engineer Mark Rains.
The album’s lead track, “Follow Me,” unfolds amid Reed’s mesmerizing work behind the kit, paying tribute to the plight of refugees (“We will travel in the night / underground and out of sight”) throughout history. “It’s not about any one movement but rather the constant stream of innocent people who’ve chosen between starting a new life elsewhere or risking their lives to stay,” says Jewell (who is also a member of indie-rock quartet Cuffed Up). “It’s sort of a privilege check and that security isn’t permanent.”
“Gypsum” compiles many of the singles the band has released over the years, including “Disappear” from 2016 and “Kaleidoscope” from ’18.
