POSSIBLE OCEANS, “Birds of Paradise”

The riveting new single from Trevor O’Neill’s alt-rock project Possible Oceans salutes “Birds of Paradise,” but most definitely not about the lovely flower. The title refers to the stream of police helicopters he witnessed over Los Angeles during the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests. O’Neill directs the video, too; it’s inspired by the 1995 Wong Kar-wai film “Fallen Angels,” and follows O’Neill and his cohorts as they drive through L.A. attempting to evade police choppers. Like their spotlights, the song’s guitars and synth strafe the landscape. The song, the follow-up to Possible Oceans’ early 2021 single “Nothing’s Shocking,” was co-produced with Jules de Gasperis.

MINDY, “Poolside”

Mindy Song debuted her solo project, simply called Mindy, this spring — a year and a half after her collaboration with Smashing Pumpkins’ Jeff Schroeder, Night Dreamer, took off. Last month she released a four-song EP, “Version 1.27,” the lead track of which is the buoyant pop song “Poolside.” The cool, futuristic video was directed by Emmy-winning Adrian Pruett, director and director of photography of “Red Table Talks” with Jada Pinkett Smith and cinematographer of the 2021 film “Venus As A Boy,” which won the audience award at the Tribeca Film Festival. FIME, “Born 2 Love”

All hail the shoegaze gods, Fime is back. The quartet — Bay Area transplants Beto Brakmo and Maxine Garcia along with Eric Promani and Scott Leahy — this month released their first single since their 2019 EP, “Sprawl.” Produced, engineered and mixed by Melina Duterte (Jay Som, Bachelor), “Born 2 Love” is billowing, harmony-rich declaration of affection that muses: “Let’s see what happens with our clothes on.” Says the band: “We just wanted to make a sweet love song,” and they did, with a road-trip video. Nice one.
