“Excuse me…” “WHAT?!!” L.A. finally had its chance to holler back at the indie post-punk outfit led by Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers last night at the Echo, Wet Leg’s West Coast live debut after taking the U.K. by storm following their early summer breakout hit single, “Chaise Longue.”

It wasn’t just the relatable drone of the lyric “on the chaise longue all day long” that captivated so many during the last weeks of a long, drawn-out pandemic lockdown. Chambers’ knack for funky riffs and Teasdale’s aesthetic visual direction in their videos also captured their off-kilter wit and smart reflections on life and modern-day relationships. Earlier this month, they released their third single, “Too Late Now” and made screen appearances on both NPR’s Tiny Desk and Late Night with Seth Meyers.

There’s nothing like the joy of being with a live audience, however. Playing a full 11-song set off their self-titled debut album (releasing April 8 via Domino) with sheer delight, the two college mate-besties charmed the sold-out crowd with not only a great set of indie-rock tunes but also their sweet humor, Teasdale quipping at one point that if the audience asks her how she’s doing, she’ll answer by screaming, “Woooooo!” The full band are in prime jam mode and ready to blast through every venue stop ahead after playing nonstop around the U.K. and Europe since the summer.

Wet Leg will next play tonight at the Moroccan Lounge (sold out) as well as Friday and Saturday at the Hollywood Palladium opening with Donna Missal for CHVRCHES. They’ll return stateside in March for a full North American tour.

East Bay (Oakland) quartet Fake Fruit opened the night with great tunes. They’re also warming up the room at tonight’s show, as well as playing a late-night set at Footsies.

Wet Leg setlist: Too Late Now, It’s Not Fun, Ur Mum, Wet Dream, Supermarket, Loving You, Obvious, Oh No, Being in Love, Angelica, Chaise Longue.
