What is truth? And how to find it?
That’s the big stuff the avant-pop artist going by the name YutaY tackles in his new single, “How to Be a Human Being,” out today.
It’s the work of New York City-bred, L.A.-based songwriter-producer Alex Utay, a genre-fluid creative who has four singles to his credit. Oh, and his own video game.
YutaY debuted in 2020 with the buzzy single, “Run,” and last year brought the love-drunk dance-pop number “Fever Dream” and another single with a clever play on “Substance.”
Heading toward the release of his debut EP, “The Uncanny Valley” (out March 8), the new single finds the songwriter pleading with the robots amid a gallimaufry of production effects.
“‘How to Be a Human Being’ speaks most strongly to the EP title, ‘The Uncanny Valley,’ which is the phenomenon whereby a computer-generated figure or humanoid robot bearing a near-identical resemblance to a human being arouses a sense of unease or revulsion in the person viewing it,” YutaY says. “When ‘truth’ is a narrative we’re fed based on profiteering algorithms we have no control over, what should we believe? What matters? What is actually real? The companion video brings to life this confusion and some of the forces behind it.”
