L.A.’s Superet were on a roll in the years just before the pandemic, releasing an EP and playing a packed residency in 2017 and releasing their debut album, “How to Work a Room,” in 2019, earning plaudits and and lofty comparisons for their left-field pop-cum-indie rock.
After some radio silence during the pandemic, main man Matt Blitzer announced in early December that Superet — as it existed before, anyway — was no more and that bandmates Alex Fischel, Patrick Kelly, Isaac Tamburino and Sam KS have moved on. “[They] are focusing on their own creative endeavors, and I am focusing on bringing Superet into a new phase,” Blitzer wrote. “I still believe in this project with all my heart, I believe in my four friends with all my heart, and I hope you’ll continue to support us all in our artistic pursuits.”
So Superet lives on as Blitzer’s solo project, one he envisions involving plenty of collaborators. First up in that department is singer-songwriter Olivia Kaplan, who melds her voice with Blitzer’s to great effect on the new Superet single, “Prism.”
It’s one of two Superet singles coming out this month, the products of recording sessions during lockdown in his parents’ basement, “with limited equipment,” Blitzer says.
Production-wise, “Prism” gets a lot out of a little — an intoxicating dalliance in trip-hop that makes you wonder what else Blitzer discovered in that basement.
