Last week, Jessie Payo had us tingling over her country persona. Today, the singer-songwriter is back as the siren in Pom Poms, her retro-rock project with collaborator Billy Mohler.

“Desperate Love,” the second Pom Poms single since 2017 and out via SQFT Records, is one for hopeless romantics, with Payo’s vocals resonating deeply, no matter which decade the calendar says we’re in.

Director Hope Leigh’s video comes advertised thusly: Imagine if a Disney movie was set in the Salton Sea’s dilapidated Bombay Beach at sundown, and you’ve got the theme song for theater nerds and cult classic freaks. To which we’d respond: Nerds, freaks … and jocks and preps and punks, for that matter — we can all swoon together, right?
