Until this week, the Americans hadn’t released new music since their 2017 debut album, “I’ll Be Yours.” That changed when the Los Angeles-based roots-rockers returned with a new single called “Stand True,” a country-rock bruiser that shows the trio — singer-guitarist Patrick Ferris, bassist Jake Faulkner and guitarist Zac Sokolow — locking into a soulful, self-assured groove.

“I’ll stand true by you,” Ferris croons in the track. “That’s what you want me to do / stand true by you / that’s what you’d have me do.” The song opens with a twangy, folk-leaning setup, but eventually switches gears to something more trenchant. Finally, a wailing guitar crescendo brings the tune into blues-rock revival territory, calling to mind the Black Keys or Brittany Howard.

“Stand True” is the title track and opening number of the Americans’ sophomore full-length, due May 6 via Loose Music. The band recorded the self-produced album at Big Bad Sound. Now they’re getting ready to head to Austin, where they’ll perform at SXSW later this month.
