Ever hear a pop number with obstreperous production and think, “There’s probably a nice song somewhere in there, but it’s flat-out getting suffocated”?
Submitted for your approval: “Breakfast at a Funeral” by Manhattan Beach-reared WENS.
The song, a collaboration with singer-songwriter Sean Kennedy, is, of course, not really about breakfast or any other beginning. It’s about an ending, and a bitter one at that. “It’s like we’ve been having / breakfast at a funeral / and I don’t want anymore … So this is goodbye goodbye,” WENS sings.
The fully produced version of the song came out in February. And today brings the dialed-back “sad version,” pretty as Eggs Benedict. Pick your favorite. Make mine with extra hollandaise.
