Since early last year, Syd has teased with a string of silky smooth singles, hinting that something bigger might be in the works. Today brought the big reveal from the 29-year-old L.A. native: Her sophomore album, “Broken Hearts Club,” will be out April 8.
The album’s lead track, “CYBAH” — an acronym for “Could You Break a Heart” — features a guest turn from Lucky Daye and production by Brandon Shoop. While the stuttery bass and riffy guitar play tag, Syd airs her relationship laundry, kicking off an album in which she’ll do more of the same.
“The album is about a relationship I had that ended in my first real broken heart,” Syd says. “It almost felt like I joined a club because all of my friends went through similar experiences. It was like a rite of passage. I started writing the album on the relationship when I was in love. You’re really getting the whole journey from the beginning to the end. I want people to find it beautiful. It’s super vulnerable, sentimental, and it’s soft. There’s touching moments and a couple of dark moments.”
There’s some of that in the video for the song, too.
