New Jersey native Jame Minogue dropped out of Berklee to pursue his music career on his own terms, and now he’s doing exactly that. On Friday, the Dominican-Irish artist announced his forthcoming EP “Príncipe Azul” with the slick, salsa-inspired earworm “Hate Being in Love.” Minogue teamed up with producers Omar Tavarez (best known for his work with Pitbull) and Mark “Pelli” Pellizzer (of MAGIC!) to bring the track to life, and the final product pairs Minogue’s bilingual lyrics with catchy melodies, colorful live instrumentation and glistening synths. The song builds toward a blissed-out, conga-driven climax.
“One day, I decided to write a love song but from the perspective of someone having a terrible time. I drew on a lot of real experiences and it was therapeutic in a way,” says Minogue. “For this song, I really wanted to combine some of the styles I grew up on. Working with Mark Pelli and Omar Tavarez, we thought it would be sick to create this blend of salsa and pop. The ending was a last-minute choice and I’m glad we went for it.”
Minogue’s new single also comes with a sunny, bucolic video directed by Camila Noriega. “We wanted to make it super dreamy to capture what new love looks like on the outside,” Minogue explains. “Meanwhile, I’m not looking very happy and my date never shows up.”
“Hate Being in Love” comes on the heels of Minogue’s previous single “Hear Me Out,” a collaboration with KORDELYA. “Príncipe Azul” is set to follow Minogue’s 2020 album “Harmless.”
