Video: Mt. Joy, ‘Lemon Tree’

The law profession’s loss continues to be folk-rock’s gain. Mt. Joy, the Philadelphia-bred band founded by onetime legal eagles Matt Quinn and Sam Cooper, have announced that they have signed to Island Records.

To mark the occasion — and to build momentum for a 37-date North American tour starting in June — the band (Quinn and Cooper, along with Sotiris Eliopoulos, Jackie Miclau and Michael Byrnes) has released the single “Lemon Tree,” along with director Hannah Edelman‘s psychedelic video.

It’s the second song they’ve released since their sophomore album, “Rearrange Us,” following their pre-election single “New President.” Like the singles that catapulted the quintet into the mainstream, it’s bright and buoyant without being cloying.

Of “Lemon Tree,” Quinn says, “It’s about realizing that you can’t change the past, but if you can work on being a force of positive energy for others you can be rewarded with the privilege of moving on.

“I was drawn to that phenomenon when you’re thinking of someone you haven’t spoken to in a while and that person texts you or reaches you in some physical way. At my most spiritual, I think there’s something about our energy that connects us. When you lean into positive energy, you’re rewarded for generating happiness for those around you. ‘Lemon Tree’ is about the power of our connection via this force.”
