Los Angeles songwriter Jamie Drake’s new single, “Easy Target,” is a free-flowing, vocally warm pop song in the vein of ’60s and ’70s AM radio hitmakers. Think of it as easy listening about a difficult topic.
The song hits home for those who’ve been subject to abuse. Drake says, “Like many, I’m someone who grew up in an abusive home and as a result searched for love to fill that void. I searched my whole life until I truly realized that I had to love myself first.” She adds, “‘Easy Target’ is an honest reflection on my not-so-recent past, as if I’m reminiscing over the mistakes of my younger self with a forgiving smile, knowing that I’ve finally learned my lesson.”
It’s the first single from her second full-length record, “New Girl,” out June 10 via AntiFragile Music. “Easy Target” was written in collaboration with Nashville singer-songwriter Caroline Spence and it’s just a really lovely song.
In the video, directed by Jon Danovic, we see Drake playfully dancing around, smoking a cigarette and performing with guitarist Austin Myles Grant. Oh, and there’s a cameo appearance from everyone’s favorite small white dog. Shot in the suburbs of Los Angeles, “Easy Target” gently reminds us to love ourselves first.
