Ears Wide Open: Dani Mack

You should have heard of Baylee Barrett by now. Just sayin’.

It was going on two years ago that the Texas-born singer-songwriter made an auspicious debut with the single “Good Time,” only to be throttled by a label deal she felt was unfair and creatively stifling.

Now she has started anew under the name Dani Mack — her father’s first and middle name — and released the (yes, it was recorded there) bedroom pop gem “Someday.” Co-written with bandmate Chris Reagan and benefiting from a mix by Gregory Uhlmann (Perfume Genius, Hand Habits, Fell Runner, et al.), it’s liable to give you chills as Barrett’s sublime voice soars against the low rumble of guitars.

“Someday” borrows its name from the first song Barrett ever wrote. “I wrote this new single, ‘Someday’ (2.0), while my first real relationship was falling apart. It was very toxic, but despite all the signs, my naivete gave me hope that things would turn around. People don’t really change, their situations do. So I guess I’m the same hopeful teenager I once was, but with a bit more grit in my teeth.”

The song was released last week via Future Gods.
