San Pedro-bred the Habits — Wolf Bradley and Andrew Macatrao, with a revolving cast of colleagues — have two EPs and a handful of singles to their credit, showcasing an endearing brand of pop-rock that can tug at the heartstrings or tickle the funny bone.
Their first single of 2022, “Don’t Need a Hero,” is their finest yet, a song that updates the sound of ’60s/’70s psych-pop and, with an onrushing chorus, turns it into a boisterous self-affirmation. The tune was written with Dave Rublin, bassist for American Authors.
“Some people love to tell you that you’re not living right when you’re following your dreams and not doing what they think you should be,” Bradley says. “This song is about taking control of your own life and standing up for the person you believe you’re meant to be. Although it’s a little cheeky in its approach, the song is very personal. Writing it with Dave Rublin served as a reminder to ourselves that we have the power to be authentically us. Follow your gut and be yourself because nobody else can do that for you.”
The song is the follow-up to the 2021 piano ballad “I Miss When You Loved Me” and 2020’s sophomore EP, “What’s the Worst That Could Happen?,” highlighted by the single “Shoulders.” The Habits’ third EP, “I Think I’m Fine But I Don’t Know,” is due to be released later this year.
