A late-arriving set from Swedish House Mafia and the Weeknd, performing songs separately and in tandem, put an exclamation point of the first weekend of Coachella on Sunday night.
The set, which included the Weeknd songs such as “Can’t Feel My Face,” “Blinding Lights” and “How Do I Make You Love Me?,” got a strong lead-in, as Grammy winner Doja Cat — who in March said she planned to quit music — drew a huge crowd for her “four-act” hour on the main stage. Tyga and Rico Nasty guested. Brash guitars, factory-sized electronics and switching up genres like costume changes (there were plenty) — she had it all.
Earlier Sunday on the main stage, Run the Jewels injected a political edge to the proceedings, Maggie Rogers worked the crowd into a sweat with her originals and a mashup of her song “Retrograde” and Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” and Surf Curse appeared dressed as characters from “The Wizard of Oz.”
Speaking of L.A. artists, Chicano Batman made their third Coachella experience, devoting half of their Gobi Tent set to songs from their album “Invisible People.” Vince Staples roared in the Sahara Tent with eight songs from his new album “Ramona Park Broke My Heart”; before Staples, Channel Tres funked up the Sahara, joined by Ty Dolla $ign and covering George Clinton; and Eyedress packed the cozy Sonora Tent.
Then there was FINNEAS, nattily attired for his late-afternoon set at the Outdoor Theatre. Swoon-worthy piano man, author of the fine 2021 album “Optimist” and Billie Eilish’s big brother and collaborator, he performed five songs from the album and worked in part of “Nobody Like U,” the tune he co-wrote with his sister for the fictional band 4*Town, from Pixar’s “Turning Red.”
