The propulsive, lighter-than-air feeling in the splendid new single from POP ETC is the sound of letting go — of youth, of the past, of moments you’ll never be able to recapture.
“Slips Away,” which features spoken-word interludes from actor-musician Jason Schwartzman, is the first song from POP ETC in three years. It introduces the trio’s forthcoming album, “Over the Moment” (release date TBA), their first since 2016’s “Souvenir.”
POP ETC — Santa Monica-reared brothers Christopher and Jonathan Chu, along with Julian Harmon — originally formed in pre-recession times as the Morning Benders. They changed their name after two albums, moving toward a more synth-driven sound on two POP ETC albums.
The new single seems a happy marriage of their aesthetics, shimmering like some of the indie-rock heroes of the mid-Aughts.
Of the song, Chris Chu says: “We all try to hold on to the past. No matter how futile or ridiculous it may seem. Why do we have so much trouble accepting that everything comes to an end? I know I’m still fighting it. Still trying to be a kid. Still trying to hold on to the joy and carefreeness of that time. There’s an energy and life to the past that we keep grasping at, and yet it always slips away.
“But it’s not just a sad story. There’s real liberation that comes with acceptance. A freedom and richness that we can tap into once we embrace that everything is fleeting. ‘Slips Away’ is about trying to get there.”
