Hrishikesh Hirway has spread his creative wings in the 15 or so years he has been in Los Angeles. The Massachusetts native first became known for his electronic chamber-pop project, the One AM Radio, the name under which he released five albums between 2002 and ’11.

The cinematic qualities of that music lent itself well to Hirway’s future endeavors, like producing and composing music for film and television. Since 2014, he has hosted and produced the popular Song Exploder podcast, chatting with fellow creatives and dissecting their work.

Recently, though, Hirway returned to making his own music. The EP “Rooms I Used to Call My Own,” released in late March, fits neatly with the nocturnal music of his former project. Plus, the seven-song collection features collaborations with old friends and new. Among them: DNTEL (Jimmy Tamborello) and BATHS (Will Wiesenfeld) were remix swappers with Hirway back in the day; Yo-Yo Ma appears on the track “Here and There”; Jay Som sings on “Home”; and Hirway’s frequent current collaborator Jenny Owen Youngs (see “Ghosts” from her forthcoming EP) co-wrote and sings on the tender “Memory Palace.”

“I spent so many years apart from making my own songs, and I didn’t know how, or even if, I would find a way back,” Hirway says of the EP. “The way I got out of my own head, finally, was by actually listening to some of the insights that artists on Song Exploder had shared, and to try writing with other people. Just as I was figuring that out, my mom passed away, and then, all I wanted to write about were the people closest to me.”

You could hardly ask for a more sublime soundtrack to your quieter moments.
