Ears Wide Open: Maeve Steele

It’s something we could all benefit from doing — easing off the accelerator. Bay Area-bred singer-songwriter Maeve Steele makes this the focal point of her new single, “Slow Down.”

Recorded by Brian Malouf, “Slow Down” is one of those songs that ironically goes by too fast. It’s reminiscent of 1990s-era alternative rock, with its melodramatic melody, light acoustic rhythms and deep lyrical content.

She repeats “Do you think we could slow it down?” throughout the tune. “I’m singing to myself as much as anyone else in that song,” says Steele, who introduced her pop-noir stylings in 2019 and released her “Barefoot” EP in 2020. “There’s a lot of things in life we can’t control, and as I’m entering adulthood and watching everyone I love get older, I have to remind myself to step back and be present, because the moments seem to go by faster and faster every day.”

“Slow Down” is Steele’s second release this year and the follow-up to “Tycho,” a track inspired by the lunar impact crater on the moon and named after the Denmark astronomer who discovered it, Tycho Brahe.

The two tracks of 2022 come on the heels of the seductive synth-pop tune, “Shimmer,” a tune that lights up the dancefloor when it comes on.
