Brother duo Cones make music that sounds like what would happen if a “Welcome to California” postcard busted into song.
Jonathan and Michael Rosen debuted in 2017, released their debut album “Pictures of Pictures” in 2019 and dove into VR in 2020. They returned today with the news that their sophomore album, “Almanac,” will be out Aug. 5.
It comes advertised as a dip into ’60s and ’70s power-pop and soft rock, and sure enough, the album’s lead track and Cones’ first single in two years, “Malice Palace,” siphons some Bee Gees/ELO/10cc vibes. Despite its title, the song doesn’t sound like it has a mean bone in its body — it’s all pastel skies and swaying palm trees — but listen closely.
