Have a blast rocking out. Do it for a good cause.
That’s the conceit behind the charity album, “Land Trust: Benefit for NEFOC,” released exclusively to Bandcamp last week. It’s a project helmed by Erica Dawn Lyle (of Bikini Kill) and Vice Cooler (of the Raincoats), and it’s a star-studded compilation, featuring the likes of Kathleen Hanna, Kim Gordon, Alice Bag, Kelley Deal, Katie Alice Greer (of Priests), Satomi Matsuzaki (Deerhoof), Mike Watt, the Linda Lindas and a bunch more.
Proceeds from the album go to the Northeast Farmers of Color Land Trust, a grassroots organization that is acquiring and returning land to indigenous nations and connecting POC farmers to land to grow healthy food.
Made remotely during the pandemic, the album saw Lyle and Cooler sketching out the songs and asking friends in their music community to add vocals, lyrics and bass. “This is the very, very rare benefit album where no one just sent in some crappy B-side,” says Hanna, who is featured on the single “Mirrorball.” “All the songs are fucking great and the performers really put their hearts into it. It’s a testament to Erica and Vice doing a phenomenal job bringing people together.”
Young L.A. quartet the Linda Lindas and Bikini Kill’s Kathi Wilcox are featured on “Lost in Thought,” which is a minute and a half of pure punk-rock ecstasy. “When we came up with the music for this one,” Lyle says, “it just felt like a rager and it brought to mind for me the pure exuberance of the Linda Lindas, so I suggested we invite them to sing on it. I thought of asking Kathi to add bass because I just remember how much we all enjoyed playing with and being around the Linda Lindas when they opened for Bikini Kill at The Palladium in 2019. Having them on a track with Kathi also really fit with the general theme of the record we were making, which was shaping up as an inter-generational lineup of lady rocker badasses.”
Witness the badassery.
