Working under the name Dan Atta, L.A. native Dan Attanasio makes indie- and folk-rock with evocative lyrics worthy of the creative writing student he once was at Brown University.
Atta has released but six singles, starting in 2019, and foundationally they spring from generations of classic rock. Together, they recall delicate-voiced frontmen such as Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie and James Mercer of the Shins.
His new single, “Last Call,” made with producer-engineer Scott Michael Smith (John Mayer, Colbie Caillat, Katy Perry, Monogem, among many others), is a melancholy breakup song motoring along on surging, lush guitar.
“This song, generally, is about a phase ending in a relationship and trying to be OK with it and whatever the next phase brings,” Atta says. “This was originally written as a slower acoustic thing, but in the studio went for something more driving and hopeful sounding. I really like songs that have sad lyrics but a hopeful sound that almost seems at odds with the lyrics (‘I’m Looking Through You’ by The Beatles, for example). So I was trying to achieve that effect.”
Atta has a full-length in the works; details on that are forthcoming.
