The human psyche is treacherous terrain, and as director Caitlin Gerard’s playful video for the new Madison Cunningham single “Hospital” suggests, it’s often a matter of perspective.

The L.A. singer-songwriter released the new rocker today, along with the news that her third album, “Revealer,” will be out Sept. 9. As with her Grammy-nominated 2019 album “Who Are You Now,” the new record finds Cunningham working with longtime producer and collaborator Tyler Chester, as well as Mike Elizondo and Tuckler Martine.

Cunningham covered the likes of Tom Waits, Jeff Buckley, Lennon and McCartney and Radiohead on the extended edition of her “Wednesday” EP released in January, and amid the guitar licks on her new single she channels some Sheryl Crow vibes. “‘Hospital’ is written from this sort of half awake, slightly drunken, on the cusp of a nervous breakdown perspective,” she says. “I think ultimately it speaks to the impossible condition of being sedated with information and trying to hold onto your sanity.”

As for the album? It comes as the title advertises. “To me, ‘revealer’ is the binding theme of the album,” she says. “The hand that slowly chips away at the mirror in which you see yourself and the world and replaces it with the reflection that is most true.”
