The Steens

Orange County siblings Elijah and Isaiah Steen pick up where they left off with the first single under their new artist moniker, the Steens.

Steeped in fuzzy guitars and bad-dude charisma, “What a Way to Die” is next-wave garage-rock descended from dirty blues. It’s produced by Justin Raisen (Lizzo, Kim Gordon, Charlie XCX, Lawrence Rothman, Kills Birds, Viagra Boys, among many others) and is the first single from the Steens’ forthcoming EP.

A certain New York foursome from the early 2000s comes to mind. Indeed, the brothers have been told that their band was like “the Black Strokes or something.” They weren’t put off by the comparison, but said, “The Strokes are great, but they’re a little polite, no? If we were gonna be the ‘Black anything’ and not ‘the Black Beatles,’ can’t we at least be ‘the Black Iggy Pops?’”

The Steens debuted in 2021 with three singles, including “Red Lights” and “What Day Is It?”
