Premiere: Boy Deluxe, ‘Left Behind’

Boy Deluxe

L.A. dark-pop duo Boy Deluxe make music that alternately soothes and provokes, working on the fringes of synth-punk, experimental electronica and EBM to illuminate what lurks in the shadows. And there is plenty, whether it’s their own emotional travails or society’s big bowlful of ills.

The duo — Hope and True Murra (Hope Simpson and Drew Murray) — have been remarkably prolific since ditching their previous moniker, Ever So Android, and relocating from Seattle to L.A. They released two mesmerizing EPs in 2021, “I Woke Up Like This Again” and “Risen.” And as the fog of the pandemic has lifted this year, they’ve continued their run of musical anesthesia.

Out this week, “Left Behind” is their latest single, a brooding self-affirmation that, owing to True Murra’s woozy, simmering production, instills power in Hope’s declaration that “I’m a supernova waiting to explode.”

“Left Behind” follows a run of releases highlighted by the February single “War Inside Me,” another of Hope’s powerful confessionals.
