Rounding up three songs and their visuals that make us wonder about endless possibilities: Watch videos from Giant Waste of Man, Arroyo Low and Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith …
GIANT WASTE OF MAN, “Millennial Ghost”
Besides offering another eye into their intensely visceral music, “Millennial Ghost” arrived with the news that post-rock outfit Giant Waste of Man will release their sophomore album, “Biographer,” on Aug. 26. (It’s one of those oughta-be-on-vinyl releases, too, so it is.) Michael Feerick of Amusement Parks on Fire directs the video for “Millennial Ghost,” which, we should point out for contextual purposes, is followed on the album by the mind-f*ck instrumental title track, so after you watch this video, go here to stream “Biographer.” “Swim” and “Summer, After” were the previous two equally riveting singles. The band — Cameron Dmytryk, Benjamin and Heather Heywood, Brandon Hardy and Scott Mercado — will celebrate their album release with a show Sept. 21 at the Echo, joined by SLUGS and Problemas. Tickets here.
ARROYO LOW, “Moments”
The follow-up to singles such as “Limousine” and “Windsor,” “Moments” is another otherworldly offering from Arroyo Low’s debut album, “2020,” out July 29 via Bodan Kuma. Arroyo Low is the solo project of songwriter-producer Dane Sandborg (of IRONTOM and Foxtrails). “This was the first song I started experimenting recording to tape with. Dylan Grombacher and I came up with a 5/4 groove and decided to record it,” he says. “Later on my own, I added saxophone, guitar, percussion and other layers. This song makes me feel like I’m cruising in northern California.” The video, the work of visual artist Michael Rollins, might make you feel as if you’re someplace else — he’s been working with Sandborg on the release, which includes a series of NFT’s that will premiere at a gallery-hosted album release show, July 30 at Vatom Inc HQ (543 Broadway St.) in Venice. The show is free with RSVP.
KAITLYN AURELIA SMITH, “Is It Me or Is it You?”
Experimental artist and composer Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith released the ambient album “The Mosaic of Transformation” in 2020 (here’s “Expanding Electricity”), in time to help us minimize some COVID anxiety attacks. Then, earlier this year, she released a collaborative album with Emile Mosseri, “I Could Be Your Dog / I Could Be Your Moon.” The new single “Is It Me or Is it You?” introduces her new album, “Let’s Turn It Into Sound,” out Aug. 26 via Ghostly International. The prismatic, futuristic video for the single was made by Smith and director Sean Hellfritsch using a motion-capture suit. Smith headlines the Teragram Ballroom on Dec. 10. Tickets.
