For four albums now, Field Medic has been crafting indie yarns that make you laugh, make you cry and leave you in puddles between the two. So when you hear that his forthcoming album is titled “Grow Your Hair Long If You’re Wanting to See Something That You Can Change,” you think: Of course.
The mastermind behind the project, multi-instrumentalist and producer Kevin Patrick Sullivan, changed things up after his last album, 2020’s “Floral Prince.” He joined up with a group of collaborators including Gabe Goodman, steel guitarist Nick Levine (aka Jodi) and drummer Nate Lich.
Group effort or no, his underdog charm shines on the loose-limbed single “I Had a Dream That You Died,” which keeps its sense of humor in the face its nightmarish conceit. “I had a dream that you died / Somehow made it about me,” he sings blithely in the chorus.
Later, he concedes: “I keep fighting each day / against this maelstrom / I feel like a Chia Pet / the way my hair looks dumb / and my heart is made of stone.”
The album is out Oct. 14 via Run for Cover Records.
