Gold Star

A folk-rock song with a New Order-style bassline — where do we sign up?

“Cherry Red” is the new single from Gold Star, the solo vehicle of L.A. native Marlon Rabenreither. Almost a decade ago, Gold Star started as a dyed-in-the-blues project, the songwriter tapping in to old soul for inspiration for his first EP and the albums “Dark Days” (2015) and “Big Blue” (2017) before turning to a more Laurel Canyon-inspired sound on 2018’s “Uppers and Downers.”

Rabenreither has the voice of an old storyteller, which perfectly suits his world-weary, lovelorn songs. It’s still here on “Cherry Red,” but backed by a steady machine groove, New Wave synths and muted guitars.

“Cherry Red” arrives with the news that Gold Star’s fourth full-length, “Headlights U.S.A. (Pts. I & II)” will be out Sept. 30. The release incorporates the five songs on the artist’s “Headlights U.S.A.” EP, released last year, with five new ones.
