MADISON CUNNINGHAM, “In From Japan”

The follow-up to “Hospital,” “In From the Japan” is the third single from two-time Grammy nominee Madison Cunningham’s sophomore album, “Revealer,” out Sept. 9. “I think ultimately this song is about being frustrated with the idea of purpose, and burdened by the sweeping questions that come with ‘No one’s holding you back now’ and all of the negative space that is left to make mistakes in,” Cunningham explains. “It very much reflected how I was feeling at the time—only able to speak in metaphors and having a hard time expressing what was so paralyzed in myself.” In other news, Cunningham is also one of the guests on the Watkins Family Hour’s new album, “Vol. II” (out Aug. 19), collaborating on a cover of Elliott Smith’s “Pitseleh.” Last week, her NPR Tiny Desk Concert was also released. Cunningham headlines the Regent Theater on Oct. 1.

SAINT CHRISTOPHER, “Crashing”

Christopher Kalil (ex-Arms Akimbo) will release his debut album as Saint Christopher on Oct. 7. It’s titled “Pop Shit,” but, well, that diminutive hasn’t applied to early singles “Fire Season” or “Winners.” Nor does it come to mind upon hearing the warm twinkle of “Crashing.” The point of this one, he says, is that you never really know. “Falling for someone is great … until it’s not,” Kalil explains. “One day you’re riding the high into the clouds and the next you’re headed face-first for the pavement. But choosing to be vulnerable despite the risks is worth celebrating.”

RACHEL GOODRICH, “Number Down”

“In 2020, I decided to make a full album solely written and recorded [with] my Rickenbacker (my guitar/main squeeze),” says singer-songwriter Rachel Goodrich, currently ensconced in her native Florida after doing the heavy lifting on the record in L.A. Co-produced with Jenny O. and engineered/mixed by Kevin Ratterman, the album was launched a few months ago with the single “Think About Me.” Now comes the second single, “Number Down,” a little lighter on the jangle but equally bursting with charm.
