Songwriter Sara Noelle’s creations straddle the space between ambient folk-pop and New Age, but their decidedly dreamy vibe is not the only attraction. Noelle writes with an exceptional economy of words and sings those verses plaintively, as if they should be enough. (In fact, she edits the print journal Lyrics As Poetry, now approaching its fourth edition.)
They mostly are.
Noelle — who true to her name has earned attention for her holiday songs — often turns her viewfinder to nature and its vastness. So it is with her new single, “Blooming Yucca.”
“I wrote this song after a long desert drive in the summer — where the temperature and the endless road almost warps your perception of the landscape and of your own mind [and] the sky changes sometimes rapidly from dust clouds in the distance to bright sun to heavy rain,” she says. “The one constant were the hundreds of yuccas, many in bloom, that lined the road, seen as dots in the expanse past my window.”
As with her recent work, including the 2020 album “Cover the Blue,” Noelle worked with Dan Duszynski of the band Loma. The new single is planned for her forthcoming third full-length.
The animated, psychedelic video for the song is the work of Kelsey Boncato.
