Summer’s over, but the vibe lives on in “Fools,” the new song from L.A. psych-pop quartet SWIMM.
The bright dance track, conjuring up nostalgia for summers past, is a collaboration with L.A.-via-Utah brother trio Goldensuns. It’s SWIMM’s first release since their too-cool-for-school cover of “Young Folks” in 2021. And, interestingly, it features a lyrical homage to Rihanna.
“As most of my friends know,” SWIMM’s Chris Hess says, “I’ve been a mega-fan of Rihanna for quite some time now — the apex of my allegiance being the summer after her album ‘Anti’ came out. It fueled a very memorable summer for me, steeped in some of the wildest times I’ve ever had in my life … all-night shows at our warehouse The Cube, friendships flourishing over shared devotions, and exploring L.A. through a heightened sense of freedom.
“‘Kiss It Better’ was my favorite song off ‘Anti,’ so I added that line in the chorus and from there wrote a fairly simple depiction of a love story I had the joy of witnessing a whole bunch that summer, between our dear friends Wyatt and Bailee. The song’s a bit of a time capsule for me in that way.”
