Video premiere: French Mouth, ‘Match Made in Heaven’

Animator Miguel Robledo’s gripping video for French Mouth’s “Match Made in Heaven” puts bold images to the song’s tragic love story. It’s a romance for dystopian times, told in spectacularly feral fashion by the L.A. hardcore quartet in under a minute and a half.
The band — Dee Frank, Brandon Reyes, Brittany Maccarello and Jacque Parras — formed in 2019 and released their debut album, “In Your Shark Eyes,” this summer. With its strafing riffs and blood-curdling vocals, the self-produced album is a conflagration of hardcore punk, biting indie-rock, prog-metal and even some psychedelic moments — 11 tracks in about 25 tidy minutes, no prisoners taken. The quartet’s manic live show matches (or even trumps) the intensity of the album, which the band says is inspired by Greek mythology and Lewis Carroll’s “The Hunting of the Snark.”
“We don’t pull punches or half-ass anything, especially our live show, which is very physical,” Frank says. “If I’m hurting while screaming my ass off, you’re gonna see it in my face and the veins popping out my neck. Everything we do is intentional, on the album and live, nothing is without meaning or emotion.”
“Match Made in Heaven” capsulizes a doomed romance between two avatars in a digital world. “Never had any choice / never had any choice / God made man / man machine,” the song concludes.
We can only wonder what comes next.
