Rounding up some catchy things that caught our ears: New singles from Fitz & the Tantrums, Capital Cities and the Rare Occasions …
FITZ & THE TANTRUMS, “Moneymaker”
Hitmakers Fitz & the Tantrums make hits, the kind of hits that make their way onto radio; into playlists at retail outlets, restaurants and stadiums; into films, television shows and sports programming; into advertisements for potato chips, banks and luxury cruises; and, possibly, into your otherwise empty head when you wake up in the morning. In short, they are hitmakers who make hits that make money, so the chorus of their new single “Moneymaker” is more than just an appropriation of the title of blues great Elmore James’ 1961 seminal hit. It is the moneymaker. Just try to make it disappear from your auditory cortex after you’ve heard it. Dare ya. Fitz & the Tantrums’ new album “Let Yourself Free” is out Nov. 11, and they bring all the hits they’ve made (including June’s “Sway”) to the Belasco Theatre on Jan. 27 (tickets).
CAPITAL CITIES & BOBBY NOURMAND, “Together”
Speaking of hits, has it really been 11 years since “Safe and Sound?” As Capital Cities’ “Safe and Sound 11th Anniversary Bundle,” which offers the song every which way, would indicate, yes. It’s been over four years since Cap Cities’ sophomore album, “Solarize,” but on Friday the duo of Sebu Simonian and Ryan Merchant returned with a glossy new track, “Together,” a collaboration with L.A. producer/DJ Bobby Nourmand. Synthtastic.
THE RARE OCCASIONS, “Not Afraid”
“Not Afraid” is the follow-up to “Seasick” as the latest single from L.A.-via-Boston trio the Rare Occasions, who released their sophomore album “Big Whoop” last year and since then enjoyed some viral love for their single “Notion.” “Not Afraid” is a bundle of hard-hitting riffs and nifty vocals all done for kids who do awkward dances to power-pop. (Who, us?) The Rare Occasions have an EP on the way, and their Dec. 3 show at the Constellation Room is sold out.
