Whether it’s the incisive lyrics or the way he makes banjo seem like the most cinematic musical instrument on the planet, Noah Weinman is all about the details. They add up to a richly evocative experience in the music he makes under the name Runnner.
Today, he announced that his proper debut album, “Like Dying Stars, We’re Reaching Out,” will be out Feb. 17 via Run for Cover Records. It follows the 2021 full-length “Always Repeating,” a compilation of singles and EPs Runnner had released since the project began in 2017.
Runnner’s music is typically high on WSPM (wistful smiles per minute), and so it is the new single “I Always Sing About Food.” “I overanalyze / I never let it feel good / I only think about death / I only sing about food,” he declares. And there you have it.
“I wrote this song at my friend’s house one morning,” Weinman says. “They were on a phone call in the other room so I remember playing very quietly and kind of mumbling until I just started saying ‘I’m an idiot,’ which made me laugh, so I decided it was a good starting point. It’s a song about trying to reckon the discord between how I thought of myself and how I felt like I was presenting myself. I was in a stage in my relationship where I wanted so badly to be known on all sides and layers, but felt frustrated at my attempts to convey them. For both production and video, I was really inspired by Madonna’s work from the late ’90’s for the ‘Music’ and ‘Ray of Light’ records.”
