Stream: Bleached, ‘Flip It’

“Flip It,” the new single from Bleached, sounds like an instant gem, from its voicemail intro to its three-chord tidal wave to the sister duo’s sweet-tart harmonies. The lyrical hook, repeated insouciantly, is the kind of thing that might unexpectedly pop into your head 10 years from now.
The irresistible slice of pop-punk is the first single from sisters Jennifer and Jessie Clavin since 2020’s “Stupid Boys.” They released their third album, “Don’t You Think You’ve Had Enough?,” in 2019 and have zoomed into their second decade of making music together. Seems like yesterday they were teenagers, wreaking havoc in venues like Pehrspace and the Smell as members of Mika Miko.
Bleached, now working independently of a label after three albums for Dead Oceans, certainly sounds revitalized — part of that, of course, owing to the fog of the pandemic lifting. “It’s a little scary putting yourself back out there after having two years of being a hermit,” Jennifer says. Adds Jessie: “I don’t know much about the business of putting out a song, but that aspect of the release is making it exciting.”
So “Flip It” is a mantra for turning the page — just pick a page in your life that needs turning.
“I heard this quote on ‘Euphoria’ when I was watching it where they said, ‘Every day you get out of bed is an act of courage,’ Jennifer says. “I really related that to the lyrics. During the time of writing this song, I felt like I had to find my inner warrior to make it through another day in L.A.”
If there were such a thing as an empowerment pill, “Flip It” is it.
