You can almost see the lights of the San Fernando Valley from the hilltop referenced in Night Shop’s new single “Universal City” — a pretty setting for a forlorn moment.

It’s the first new song from singer-songwriter Justin Sullivan — drummer for Kevin Morby, Flat Worms and the Babies — since February’s release of the second Night Shop album, “Forever Night.”

“Held you close at the top of the hill / I loved you then and I love you still / But it’s not right / It’s not our time,” Sullivan sings, calm in face of closure.

The song, he says, captures “a night where I accepted the end of something, and in the midst of that pain, was touched by a sense that there is still so much to be inspired by in this life. I can get very narrow in my perspective and closed off, consumed by my own desires. This is about a moment where I made the decision to open back up again. I wanted someone to feel like this could be happening anywhere to anyone. And at this very moment, it is right now.”

The song is the first half of a double-single arriving via Dangerbird Records. “Harness” will be released at a later date.
