Shining in classic SoCal style, Pearl & The Oysters have made it a point to showcase what it is like to live in Los Angeles in their latest tune, “Pacific Ave.” With beachy chords, coastal vibes and a vibrant groove, you can almost but feel the sand between your toes.
It’s the group’s first track since signing to Stones Throw Records and it features Alex Brettin of Mild High Club on guitar. The ’80s-style video for the tune, inspired by jazz fusions groups like Casipoea, includes tropical cocktails, palm trees and good times.
Pearl & The Oysters, the French-American duo of Juliette Pearl Davis and Joachim Polack, have released three full-length LPs, a slew of singles and an EP in collaboration with Biche. After meeting in France, they moved to Florida in 2015 and then to Los Angeles in 2020.
The band says the song, made during the pandemic, “was a cryptic attempt to allude to our first steps in this new environment being a little alienating, as we were discovering a megalopolis turned ghost town.” They add, “Because we were physically confined, it really felt like the only avenue to escape was a mental one. For us, it meant a lot of daydreaming and fantasizing about L.A. itself or what it could represent.”
“Pacific Ave” comes on the heels of their third LP, “Flowerland,” which first aired late last year. The album’s opener, “Soft Science,” is the duo’s attempt at romantic candor, accompanied by festive percussion and big swells.
