Ears Wide Open: Geia

Geia Wilkinson — just Geia when she’s releasing music — is a native Angeleno tapping into the visceral energy of ’90s alternative rock.
She draws inspiration from historical figures such as “Emily Dickinson and Joan of Arc … women who challenged the status quo,” she says. “I realized the best thing I can do for myself is listen to my inner self. She was screaming and she wanted to be heard, too.”
Cue her first single as a solo artist, “All Girls to the Front,” a guitar-heavy statement of purpose in which she declares, “I’ve had enough / of your misguided words / Telling me who I am / Telling me what I’m worth.”
Geia worked with producer Nick Tashjian at the NOYZR Music studio and was backed by guitarist Jordan Kennedy, bassist Terrance Wright and drummer Trey Cornish. True to its title, which references the riot grrrl movement, the heavy and melodic “All Girls to the Front” recalls any number of punk and grunge torchbearers from the ’90s, swinging from the heels while answering their own, very important question: “Who do you want me to be?”
