Los Angeles trio Your Grandparents — Chaz Carter, Kyle Dacosta and Cole Thompson (aka Ghettoblasterman) — blend R&B, funk and hip-hip in a way that gives parents (and, yes, grandparents) the warm and fuzzies.
The trio got their start in 2019 rapping over R&B production but spread their wings on last year’s album “Thru My Window,” which, true to its opening track, was “So Damn Fly.” This year has brought three new singles, “Somebody Told Me” (a collaboration with Amindi), the fun ’n’ funky “Pootie Tang (G.T.K.Y)” and, most recently, “Livin’ in Hell.”
The latter, which arrived with a video directed by the band and Ujjwal Chande, is a lyrical powder keg, a casting out of demons and a biting inventory of how they go there in the first place, trapped in “this eternal doom and spinning room.”
“‘Livin’ in Hell’ is a medley of blues, soul and hip-hop that encapsulates the feeling of existing in a world designed to work against you. The song is not only a cry of contempt but also a declaration of resilience in the face of such dastardly institutions.”
