LANNDS are the duo of Rania Woodard and Brian Squillace, who’ve made three EPs of polyglot electronic music since 2017, all of which can be characterized as vibrant. What they also made is a cross-country move — from their origins in Jacksonville, Fla., to Los Angeles — just after writing the songs on their debut album, “Music for the Future.”
The duo’s future is a place where Woodard’s airy vocals and empowering lyrics conspire with futuristic production and beats to create swirling psych-pop that is affirming and, dare we say, optimistic in its own way.
Of the latest single “Bonfire,” Woodard told Brooklyn Vegan: “This song is meant to capture the feeling of when you are done with old patterns to make room for new ways. When you’re used to accepting things as the norm, it’s hard to stand up for yourself so this song is affirmation to keeping those patterns and people away. To accept a new version of yourself and what you want.”
In the album announcement last month, Woodard described the collection an “open letter” to herself. From what LANNDS has released so far, it makes for good over-the-shoulder reading.
“Music for the Future” is out March 3 via Run for Cover Records.
