Object of Affection is a three-year-old quintet mixing heavy doses of melodic, atmospheric post-punk, steely darkwave and swing-from-the-heels ’90s rock.
The band has some hardcore in its DNA (various resumés include the likes of Fury, Death Bells and LOCK), but Object of Affection has a more exacting — yet somehow still primal — roar. Guitarists Madison Woodward and Remy Veselis set the tone, with vocalist Colin Knight’s big croon cutting through it. Bassist Garrett La Bonte and drummer Nick Nadel provide ample muscle.
We blame the pandemic for missing Object of Affection’s debut EP (and its bristling ’80s pastiche) in December 2020, but the outfit upped its game for a 2022 single on Suicide Squeeze.
A shift in their lineup followed, and the new year will bring the release of the quintet’s debut album, “Field of Appearances,” out March 3 via Profound Lore Records.
They’ve released two singles so far — “Half Life” seems to enter the body drums-first through the temples, not the ears, carving out space for distortion-drenched foreboding. Second single “Con-Man” thrums along with the same kind dark drama.
The album was made with Phillip Odom, who co-produced along with the band’s Woodward, and mixed by Grammy-winning producer Alex Newport. An early-March tour will celebrate the release of of “Field Of Appearances.”
