Whether Gregory Uhlmann is speaking to a sibling, another relative or an imaginary friend in his new song “Again and Again,” it’s a vivid scenario. Told from the point of view of the “nervous kid, didn’t talk very much / in the back of the station wagon,” ostensibly on a family trip, the song salutes the person who was “the glue [who] held us together.”
Uhlmann’s unassuming narration, typically precise guitar work and a tootle of woodwind make it something revisit “Again and Again.”
The song is the title track to the L.A.-based Chicago native’s third solo album, out April 28 on Northern Spy Records. His previous full-length, the highly regarded “Neighborhood Watch,” came out in 2020.
Uhlmann has played with Fell Runner, Perfume Genius, Typical Sisters and Hand Habits and has produced and/or recorded with several others. Two of the artists with whom he’s worked in the studio, Miya Folick and Olivia Kaplan, contribute vocals on the album, which was co-produced by Gabe Wax.
In director Sam Congdon’s video for “Again and Again,” Uhlmann’s imaginary friend seems not of this earth. Stay for the surprising finish.
