Seattle-bred, L.A.-based Joh Chase (née Johanna Chase) is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, composer and educator whose resumé in independent music circles goes back two decades.
Chase has cultivated a small but devoted following, some of whom have helped crowd-fund releases over the years. It’s easy to see why: Chase’s folk-adjacent rock and storytelling prowess play equally to the head and heart, fashioning confessionals with broad appeal.
This week brought the news that the songwriter has signed to long-running indie label Kill Rock Stars. And the new single, “Lucky Penny,” swings with optimism, using the metaphor of a coin that always ends up heads.
Made with producer-engineer Dan Molad (of Lucius), it finds Chase backed by bassist Marc Walloch and drummer Julian Allen. And by the time “Lucky Penny” is over, you can’t wait for the next coin toss.
