Wallice’s music walks a tightrope between wistful indie-pop and ’90s-tinted pop-rock, and on the singer-songwriter’s first two EPs, “’90s American Superstar” last year and “Off the Rails” in 2021, she’s proven an engrossing diarist.
A jazz school dropout who moved from New York to L.A. and found a collaborator in childhood friend David Marinelli, Wallice Watanabe will release her third EP, “Mr Big Shot,” on June 23 as she embarks on a North American tour (local dates below).
“Disappear” (released today) makes an arty entrance before nodding to good ol’ pop punk after its arty, and the previous single\, “Loser at Best,” reveals her affection for Weezer. It’s a love song to her longtime boyfriend, and just plain fun. “Best Friend” is a pensive look a friendship — dreamy, then tough as her saccharine vocals compete with surging guitar.
