Career Woman, the L.A.-founded, Santa Cruz-based band led by 19-year-old Melody Caudill, is back with “Passing,” a song about watching time go by. It’s the third single off the new EP, “Grapevine,” out today via Lauren Records.
In the accompanying video for “Passing,” we see a glimpse into Career Woman’s recent tour, including life on the road, prepping for a show and, of course, performing. Meanwhile, Caudill repeats, “I’m sick of this passing time,” suggesting that things are perhaps moving too fast.
That would be a reasonable assumption to make too, given the central theme of “Grapevine.” The EP is a coming of age journey that explores themes of first love, the complexities of queer identity, and the challenging road to self-discovery.
Previously released single, “Jupiter,” also showcases these concepts. In the rocking ‘tune, Caudill sings of the anxiety associated with love and fear in relationships. The album opener, “Lady” also shares these themes and sets the stage for the exploration of teenage angst.
Despite the lyrical nature of these tracks, they’re all rather lighthearted songs and they capture Career Woman’s easy-going, alternative ’90s sound.
Musically, “Grapevine” showcases Caudill’s growth as a musician and songwriter, thanks in part to the collaborative efforts from her bandmates, Jackson Felton and Allen Moreno, who played key parts in writing, recording and producing the new record.
