Catching up with the latest from Sun Room, Go Betty Go and Julie …
SUN ROOM, “Cut My Hair”
Surf-rock agitators Sun Room on Nov. 30 will release their second EP of 2023, the Zac Carper (FIDLAR)-produced “At Least I Tried.” Fresh off releasing the title track, the band is back with “Cut My Hair,” a shot of retro-style adrenaline. “‘Cut My Hair’ is a song we’ve been jamming in the garage and at shows forever but it never felt done ’til we recorded it this past time. We’ve played it at so many gigs and we were always changing it, but we finally landed on a version we were stoked on,” frontman Luke Asgian says. “We took one of the classic chord progressions you’d hear in all the 1950s hits and then just played it faster and louder.” Sun Room plays the House of Blues Anaheim on Nov. 22 and the Fonda Theatre on Nov. 29.
GO BETTY GO, “We Talk a Lot”
As the band’s namesake guitarist Betty Cisneros continues her battle with cancer, pop-punk quartet Go Betty Go have released “We Talk a Lot,” the follow-up to their September comeback single “Keep Up.” Says singer Nicolette Vilar: “‘We Talk A Lot’ is a song that dives into that feeling we all feel and have felt, when you’re falling in love with a friend, partner, life, etc., and you just want to take off on an adventure together and have it never end. It’s a wonderful place to be and hopefully, everyone has a chance to experience that at least once in their life. And if it hasn’t happened to you yet, it’s a glimpse into what it could be like and a way to look forward to the day it does happen. The song comes from a sincere place.” The band’s new EP, “Black and Blue,” is on the way via Wiretap Records.
JULIE, “Catalogue”
We’re late to the party in sharing the latest from young O.C.-bred trio Julie (Keyan Pourzand, Alex Brady and Dillon Lee), who are in the middle of a sold-out tour that includes a stop at the Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival and dates Dec. 1 and 2 at the Constellation Room. “Catalogue,” their first release of 2023, is the follow-up to last summer’s “Pg.4 a Picture of Three Hedges” / “Through Your Window.” It’s easy to hear why grunge and shoegaze revivalists are turning somersaults. “Catalogue” roars through three minutes of chaos and somehow turns dread, and then tristesse, into something palpable.
