Cellars - Alle Norton
Cellars' Alle Norton

Back in the 1980s — which, weirdly, was before Alle Norton was born — we knew a lot of young women like her. They were chronic diarists with perfect hair who spend lots of time in their bedrooms pining and listening to Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Tears for Fears and Berlin (or if they were really cool, Ultravox). They all come to mind during “Lovesick,” Norton’s debut album as Cellars, 10 tracks of synth-pop magic the 24-year-old conceived in her bedroom. The singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist first gained notice for her work as a teenager in Texas (Jenny Lewis was a reference point back then, and you can still hear it); she subsequently studied audio engineering and spent some time behind the board for the band Ringo Deathstarr. Having matriculated to L.A. in 2013, Norton, working largely solo, set about refining her electro-pop … in her bedroom. It’s so easy to imagine John Taylor and the boys staring down from that poster on the wall during the elegant bounce of Cellars’ “I Won’t Be Falling in Love.” “Lovesick” is out this week via Manimal Vinyl.
