Video: Adult Books, ‘Suburban Girlfriend’

Adult Books have the “suburban” part of the suburban angst down; Nick Winfrey, Sina Salessi and Daniel Quintanilla hail from the “stucco-swathed suburbs of Orange County,” as the bio says, where anything can happen and obviously has. Like the improbable, and improbably silly, cassette revolution. The trio’s infectious 2012 cassette EP came out on Burger and Lolipop Records, homes to hordes of retroists with an admirable back-to-basics approach, and was a smash hit. The forthcoming full-length “Running From the Blows” could very well separate Adult Books from the masses. The first single “Suburban Girlfriend” seems a sincere slice of pop-punk, but the better part of the album has more bite, speaking to the trio’s post-punk influences, like “Nihilism for Beginners” (New Order) and the sharp “Silver Lake Goths” (Wire). After all, Adult Books named their band not out of some prurient interests, but after the 1981 song by X. They have something to say beyond this initial video, so stay tuned for the album’s March 4 release via Lolipop.
